The Goonies is a novelization of the 1985 film of the same name by James Kahn.
Publication[]
It was initially released on paperback in 1985, with the first hardcover release in 2013, and the first eBook release in 2009.
Details[]
The synopsis of the novel closely follows the story of the movie, as told from Mikey's point of view.
Notable, however, is that the book is based on the movie's script and not the final product. As such, a number of scenes and elements cut from the final movie are included. The Astoria Country Club retains its original name, the Hillside Country Club, and the original setting of Hillside, Oregon remains (despite mentioning Astoria numerous times).
Cut characters such as Grandpa are also mentioned, and deleted scenes like the Goonies Oath and leeches scene are included. Irving Walsh is also referred to by his original script name "Andrew Walsh". The novel also includes the cut epilogue that goes into detail about the founding of the Friends of the Goon Docks and the fall of the Astoria Country Club thanks to the efforts of the Goonies. The final lines of the novel reveal Sloth's subsequent adoption by Chunk's family and his name change to Jason Sloth Cohen.
