The Jeep Cherokee XJ is a model of car manufactured by AMC that appears in The Goonies.
Details[]
The Cherokee XJ is a four-wheel drive, compact SUV; it is referred to simply as an ORV in the film and is seen driving through less ideal terrain, such as dirt and mud. It is black and has a sun roof; the ORV is specifically fitted with Michelin tires.
Involvement[]
The Cherokee is used by Mama Fratelli and Francis to help Jake escape from Clatsop County Jail. The back doors don't work, however, and so Jake has to climb in through the open sunroof. As police give chase to the criminals, they shoot the back of the car, puncturing the trunk door and leaving a series of bullet holes.
The car blends in with an ORV race on the beach of Astoria, and they get away and reach their home base of the Lighthouse Lounge.
When the Goonies arrive to the restaurant in search of One-Eyed Willy's treasure, Chunk recognizes the car in the garage as the one from the police chase earlier. Shortly after, the Fratellis take the car out to dump a body.
When Chunk tries to flag down a car to get a ride to town from Cannon Beach, it's the Cherokee he gets the attention of. He's tossed into the back along with another dead body and they ride back home to interrogate him.
Behind the scenes[]
A replica of the vehicle used in The Goonies now sits in the parking lot of the Oregon Film Museum; it is complete with bullet holes in its trunk door.
