After the legendary exploits of the Goonies, the Goon Docks underwent a dramatic rebirth. The discovery of jewels from One-Eyed Willy's pirate treasure by the Goonies not only rescued the neighborhood from the brink of foreclosure at the hands of the Astoria Country Club's corporate heads but also paved the way for a brighter, more secure future. Michael Walsh's delivery of the treasure to his father, Irving Walsh, was a turning point. With the Hillside Country Club Corporation's foreclosure papers ripped apart, Mr. Walsh would soon establish the Friends of the Goon Docks, a community cooperative focused on revitalizing and preserving the area.

As chairman, Mr. Walsh united key members of the neighborhood to combat the predatory tactics of Hillside and other corporate threats. Using their newfound wealth, the cooperative filed a restraining order against the Hillside Group and purchased the Astoria Country Club. Their ambitious plans included demolishing the club to build affordable housing, ensuring the Goon Docks remained a haven for working-class families. Additional initiatives aimed to use the country club's property to create a historical museum, a children's center, a fish market, a plumbing supply shop, a Chinese restaurant, and a public-access invention lab, all designed to strengthen community ties and foster growth.

By late December, part of the old Hillside property had been transformed into the Goondock Recreation Center—a powerful symbol of the community's unity and resilience. The center's first major event, held on December 30th, was the Bar Mitzvah of Jason Sloth Cohen, the recently adopted son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Cohen.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The Friends of the Goon Docks originally appeared in the epilogue of the earlier script from The Goonies but as with many other elements such as Grandpa and the Stop 'N Snack, it never had a chance to appear in the final version of the movie or even shot as a deleted scene due to time constraints. However, it was fortunately included in The Goonies novelization which was based on the unaltered and unedited script as the novel was being written before the film's finalized version was edited and completed. The organisation's name and its activities were conveyed to the audience on an article in the Astoria Herald newspaper.[1]
