Anne Ramsey (March 27, 1929 – August 11, 1988) was an actress who portrayed Mama Fratelli in The Goonies.
Life and career[]
Ramsey was born as Angelina Mobley on March 27, 1929 in Omaha, Nebraska. Initially taking an interest in theater over film, she acted in numerous Broadway shows in the 1950s, where she met her husband, Logan Ramsey.
Ramsey's first film role was in 1971 in The Sporting Club. She began acting on television as well, and starred in productions from both, including Wonder Woman, Little House on the Prairie, Murder, She Wrote, and ALF.
Her most famous acting roles were as Mama Fratelli in The Goonies and Mrs. Lift in Throw Momma from the Train, both roles netting her numerous "Best Actress" awards at shows, such as the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes.
Ramsey was diagnosed with esophageal cancer prior to production of The Goonies and had surgery to remove parts of her jaw and tongue because of it. She developed a heavy slur as a result.
Her cancer returned in 1988 and she passed away due to it on August 11 of the same year. She was 59 when she died.
Trivia[]
- Ramsey was a character actor who played similar roles in almost everything she acted in. The Goonies and Throw Momma from the Train both cast her as a old mother, albeit less disgruntled in The Goonies.
- The Goonies was released on television in autumn of 1988. After its first showing on TV, a post-credits scene said "Dedicated to the memory of Anne Ramsey, our Mama Fratelli."
